The Vegvísir — often called the Icelandic “runic compass” or “wayfinder” — is a symbol woven from survival magic. Its name means “That Which Shows the Way.” This sigil was not carved for show — it was made to be carried into storms.

Originally appearing in 19th-century Icelandic grimoires like the Huld Manuscript, the Vegvísir is not an ancient Viking relic, but it draws heavily from Norse magical systems, staves, and beliefs that reach back through centuries of northern mysticism. It is not a rune in the traditional Elder Futhark sense, but a galdrastafir — a magical stave composed of intersecting symbols meant to channel and amplify intention.

Its power lies in paradox: it is both map and shield. It is a talisman for travelers of both land and spirit, especially when the path is unclear. Traditionally, it was said that “the bearer of this symbol will not lose their way, even when the way is not known.” And that still applies — especially when the terrain is emotional, ancestral, or metaphysical.

But Vegvísir is more than spiritual GPS. It is also a circle of protection, anchoring your energy so that chaos cannot hijack your journey. In this way, it serves as a banishment tool — not just to repel external harm, but to dispel internal misdirection: doubt, fear, unwanted attachments, old programming.

To work with the Vegvísir is to choose discernment over distraction. It doesn’t just point north — it holds you steady while you remember what you’re walking toward. It’s not only a compass — it’s a boundary. An energetic perimeter that says: I will not stray. I will not be led astray. I will not invite in what does not honor my direction.

The Vegvísir doesn’t just guard your path.
It reminds you there is one.

Purpose: To protect your energy, clarify your path, and banish anything that seeks to distract, derail, or drain your soul’s journey.

Materials:
• A black or white candle (for protection and clarity)
• Salt or crushed eggshells (for boundary work)
• A small mirror or reflective object
• A pen and paper
• A symbol of your path (a charm, talisman, or written word)
• Optional: oil with protection herbs (mugwort, rosemary, angelica, frankincense)

Steps:

1. Create the Compass Circle.
   On your working surface or floor, use salt or crushed eggshells to draw a rough circle. In the center, place the candle and your symbolic item. This is your protected path space.
2. Draw the Vegvísir.
   On paper or in the air with your finger, draw the Vegvísir. Visualize each line as a beam of light anchoring you to your purpose, shielding you from detours. Say: “I call the wayfinder. I conjure the shield. I stand centered in soul, unshaken by storm.”
3. Banish the Distractions.
   On a separate piece of paper, write what must be banished: confusion, fear, influence, a name, a looping thought. Burn or tear the paper (safely), letting it fall outside the circle. Say: “This has no hold. This does not guide me. I walk forward unburdened.”
4. Seal the Mirror.
   Hold the mirror over the candle. Let the flame reflect. Whisper your      protection phrase into the mirror: “I walk with protection. I journey with purpose. I am shielded from what would stray me from my path.” Blow your breath over the mirror to “seal” it.
5. Close the Circle.
   Extinguish the candle. Dispose of the ashes or scraps outside your home. Keep the mirror near your bed or altar as a wayfinder talisman.
